“Riot is releasing too many female characters for LoL”. How many women are actually in the game and how many men?

Recent characters in LoL are practically all women. What do the statistics look like?

League of Legends players are wondering when Riot will slow down with the release of female characters. The vast majority of those who have appeared in the game over the past month or so have been female.

As it turns out, however, the gender statistics may surprise you. It looks like the developers have a lot of catching up to do, as there are many more male ones.

Men and women in LoL

In League of Legends at this moment, there are 161 different champions. The developers always try to make each hero different and distinguished by an interesting concept, skills, or even character. As a result, in the game, we can see not only monstrous non-humanoid creatures but also cute little cats or ordinary people with weapons or magical powers.

Admittedly, it might seem that League of Legends has been really saturated with women lately, but it turns out that there aren’t that many of them in the game at all. It is indeed true, however, that for the past 2 years Riot has focused on creating only them. Of the last 11 heroes released, as many as 9 of them are female:

  • Samira
  • Seraphine
  • Rell
  • Viego
  • Gwen
  • Akshan
  • Vex
  • Zeri
  • Renata Glasc
  • Bel’Veth
  • Nilah

This made the community wonder what was going on and some even accused Riot of political correctness. However, if you check the entire list, you can see that, for example, there have been years where only men were released or there were two or three guys for every one woman.

One Reddit user summarized this and created a “tier list” showing the exact difference. In this he omitted Kindred and Bard, whose gender is not entirely known.

As you can see, men are much more numerous. However, this does not mean that Riot will chase statistics and now only women will be released. Instead, they can be expected in greater numbers and perhaps in a few years, this will level off.
