Epic founder reveals the reason for the Fortnite engine change. What is coming in 2022?

Tim Sweeney, Epic’s founder, and CEO, replied why Fortnite actually changed the engine from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5.

Epic is constantly trying to make Fortnite a more comprehensive game that allows you not only to enter the Battle Royale mode. Developers know very well that the best online games were created from various modes and ideas of the players themselves.

Therefore, in 2022, it is planned to introduce a new version of the Creative Mode, which has received the marking 2.0. There will be many different novelties there that will allow Fortnite to develop.

Creative mode has great potential, which unfortunately at the moment is primarily used for silly YouTube videos, possibly for finding more ways to earn XP.

This may change eventually. Over the past months, Epic has shown several times how they would like to develop the creative mode. In short, the idea is to give players completely new possibilities to create maps, modes, and visual effects.

And that is likely to come in 2022, or at least “not in 2021”. It is worth noting this because the CEO of Epic did not provide a date, he only mentioned that it would not be 2021. Recently, a similar situation took place in Blizzard, on the occasion of Overwatch 2, where the studio had to clear up some wrong information.
