You go out to pick up the parcel and suddenly you see Gabe Newell. What was the founder of Valve delivering?

Counter Strike

Gabe Newell has rarely appeared in public, so it seems absurd for him to ship packages with Steam Deck. And yet it happened.

The Valve community doesn’t seem to have much contact with the platform’s co-founder, Gab Newell. He usually avoids contact with his users.

Therefore, it seems absurd to say that “Gaben” personally delivers parcels with Steam Deck. There is some evidence, however.

Parcels delivered by “Gaben” may be the fruit of marketing activities

The news that Gabe Newell is shipping pre-ordered Steam Deck packs has probably started on Reddit.

A community member of this site, using the name “SeattleRainPidgeons”, wrote that the package with the device was delivered by the co-founder of Valve himself, who also left his autograph. Moreover, he received the item for free.

The Reddit user also added a few words about the whole situation. Steam Decks seem to have been delivered to people who just recognized Valve’s co-founder:

Saw a camera crew going up to my neighbors house while I was loading stuff into my truck. My roommate recognized the guy being followed as Gaben, I didn’t believe him, our other roommate then verified it was indeed Gabe.

This is not the only entry of this type as another user, “bitfiddler0”, posted a very similar photo. The entry was signed with the words:

GabeN showed up at my house and delivered my Steam Deck!

The autograph itself can of course be forged or added due to the fact that the products are pre-sale. However, there is one more piece of evidence to suggest that all of this may be true. It is a camera photo in front of the front door, which shows a courier with a package. This man does look like Newell.

If this is true, sooner or later material from this promotional campaign will appear. All the evidence so far seems to be very much reliable.
