Riot honestly about tokens and rewards for LoL events. What will change in the future?

League of Legends

The creators of LoL explain why it is impossible to create the perfect pass with prizes.

Event Passes are a great opportunity to get new cosmetic items. In the store for tokens, you can unlock a lot of items – emotes, icons, frames, chromas, and more. In addition, the offer also includes a Prestige skin, Mythic Essence, or orbs with random content.

It would seem that such a system is perfect, but as you might expect – in practice it is completely different. Some players are complaining about the current state of Event Passes.

Riot decided to comment on this and explain why creating a system that will please everyone is incredibly difficult and even impossible.

Problem with League of Legends passes

With each subsequent LoL event, the community starts with the theme of passes and their content. Some complain that the missions force players to grind, and others comment on the store’s content, which they do not always like.

Ken Adams NSA commented on the subject, explaining that creating an event that would satisfy such a huge community is practically impossible. Especially since there are groups of players who want contradictory things.

Okay, lots to unpack here. We have done a lot of research on event passes in League, and players do value the ability to choose their rewards. Because we have SO MANY champions, we try to cast a wide net of options in each shop to appeal to as many players as possible for events.

Choice here is a double-edged sword: for people who want it all, this is painful, for people who wouldn’t care unless we had something for their main, it’s exciting. So, I appreciate that your suggestions stay within the bounds of player choice and the token system.

To elaborate on this a bit more, we have a bunch of different types of players who engage with passes: A large chunk of players literally skip every piece of exclusive content and ONLY buy event orbs. We don’t cap token earn rates or orb purchases so players who play a ton of League get an enormous amount of value here (like… a LOT of value).

Then, there’s people who choose to get a Prestige skin, which is a relatively small %, because again – the content is very champion-specific. If you don’t play Talon, the top prize in the MSI pass is largely irrelevant to you.

And then, finally, there are folks who collect chromas and other accessories, which is the smallest group of the bunch. Even when controlling for eligibility (eg – earning enough tokens to get whatever they want) these cohorts don’t shift much.

The point I’m trying to make is there isn’t ONE way that players value Event Passes, and finding the best way to appeal to each of them is a tricky balancing act. With our Event Pass Overhaul later this year, we’ll have more levers and capabilities to guarantee a floor of value that ALL players get if they buy the pass.

The goal here is that earning tokens almost feels like a bonus, because the main milestone track gives you your money’s worth and then some with moderate levels of play.

You should be able to feel like the Pass was still worth your time and money, even if you fall short of Prestige, basically. This also gives us more flexibility to make missions more interesting and make the grind more fun and varied, which is something we are constrained on currently because Missions are the sole source of all guaranteed rewards.

As you can see, Rioter mentioned that the developers are working on changes to the passes to please their community.

One player asked when any changes to the content of League of Legends events could be expected. Ken Adams wrote:

Q4 basically. So September – December. We are targeting Worlds.
