Riot admits mistake and will compensate players for token shortages in missions of this year’s LoL Worlds pass

The developers of League of Legends have conceded to one player and will give extra experience in upcoming missions.

League of Legends passes have changed significantly with the arrival of the event, which was introduced on the occasion of this year’s Worlds championship. Players unlock tokens – the main currency of each event – in a slightly different way, and tracking progress was intended to be simpler than before.

Skeptical about the changes, players wondered if they would work out (Riot reveals how much progress in new LoL pass can be made with missions alone). It was not uncommon for pass patches issued by Riot to make them less profitable. Whether it was because they offered less content, or they made it harder to unlock tokens.

The developers assured that all they cared about was improving the clarity and readability of the content and that the speed of unlocking individual items would remain the same. In the end, it turned out that the missions give less than before. How did one of the designers address this?

Riot on event rewards

Players who wanted to unlock the event’s more expensive content, such as prestige skins and prestige points, in addition to completing all missions have always had to play some more games to get the required amount of tokens via a recurring mission. The developers assured that the number of these games would not change, and fans would not have to grind more to access the desired content.

It turns out that missions during the Worlds 2022 event give fewer tokens than before. This means that the number of games that had to be played to unlock more expensive items in the event’s store has increased. Riot Sakaar spoke out on behalf of the team and wrote that this was not intentional, and the missions will be updated to compensate players for the shortfall.

Hey everyone, the team just finished working on this issue and we’ve come to the conclusion that we did indeed make a mistake. You are correct, if you played 70 games during this worlds pass compared to the previous one, you’d be down approximately 205 tokens. This is because we folded 5 weekly missions’ worth of tokens (at 200 tokens each) into the rewards track rather than 6 weekly missions’ worth.

It was an honest mistake due to navigating new challenges that came with our first New Pass experience and launching at Worlds. Excuses aside, we want to reiterate that we messed up and we’re going to make it right. We’re updating the Empyrean missions (launching in patch 12.21) to grant an additional 4400 Pass XP across those 10 missions. In other words, if a mission rewarded 300 XP before, it will now reward 740 XP. The total XP rewarded for all 10 Empyrean missions will be 8300 XP. That’s the equivalent of another 11 pass milestones (or 220 tokens). We appreciate the attention to detail, and we will be double checking all upcoming events to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

With the arrival of missions tied to new skins, Empyrean Riot plans to give players more experience to compensate for the lower amount of tokens in the Worlds pass. The developers have admitted their mistake and assured that for future passes they will try not to repeat it.

It’s worth noting that it’s all due to a post by one of the players with the nickname IrrsinnIsReal. He calculated how many tokens can be obtained during this year’s Worlds pass and contrasted it with last year’s event. With this, he drew Riot’s attention to the problem, which will be eliminated with the arrival of the Empyrean missions.
