Riot honestly about PvE modes in League of Legends – “This is not a game for this type of content”

Will PvE modes ever return to LoL? Why is creating them so difficult?

Over the years, League of Legends has seen a number of Rotating Modes. Riot tested new maps and modified those that already appeared in the game. Individual modes were usually associated with in-game events or the release of new skins.

As you know, not everything has stood the test of time, and the creators focused on what attracts the greatest interest in the community, i.e. URF (and its random version) or One for All.

Some players are dissatisfied with this and feel that Riot should not only focus on stats, but what the actual fan opinions are. And as you know – some modes were highly praised and are still remembered with a smile on their face. Many people sincerely miss PvE games like Invasion or Odyssey: Extraction. Is there any chance of their return?

PvE modes in League of Legends

One of the players mentioned the PvE rotation modes. In his opinion, Riot should not judge them in the same way as those where you fight against other players. The fan found that the fundamental differences in gameplay made PvE modes less popular, which doesn’t mean the community doesn’t like them.

The case was commented by one of the employees – Ken Adams NSA, who wrote:

We can’t (and don’t) use the same measurements of success for a PvE experience that is not as repeatable as a PvP experience. Still – League as a game is not built to support these types of experiences in a way that is sustainable or empowering for the teams who have put them together. It is extremely difficult to work against what the game is natively built for to create a PvE experience, and at a certain point, it begs the question of whether or not it would be better to satisfy the PvE needs in other, more fleshed out ways (like Ruined King for example).

We know that there is a (relatively) small, but ultra-satisfied group of players who loved Odyssey, and more broadly, it was an exciting moment for League. We want to find ways to build on those feelings that are complementary to what League is designed as (a PvP game) and recreate those same “holy s*** this is super unique!” reactions.

The fans of PvE modes are really sad, because they have not received anything new for many years, and the situation is not expected to change. It’s been 4 years since the premiere of Odyssey: Extraction because the mode of this type appeared in 2018. A year earlier – in 2017 – players could have fun during Invasion, a mode that was closely related to Star Guardian skins.
