CSGO will not switch to Source 2. It will immediately jump to the just announced Source 3 engine

Counter Strike

Players got an announcement that was rather hard to expect.

There has been talk for years about the need to switch CS: GO to a new engine. In recent months, and even days, there has been a lot of speculation that CS: GO will eventually switch to Source 2. Valve has gone a step further.

In 2023, Counter-Strike Global Offensive will not be ported to Source 2, but to the newly announced Source 3 engine.

CS: GO on Source 3

The new engine, of course, means new possibilities. CS: GO will be completely rebuilt. Developers mention, among others:

  • A new environment destruction system.
  • New types of cosmetic items.
  • New temporary events.

CS is supposed to be constantly updated, undergo regular weapon balance changes and receive live events exactly like in LoL or Fortnite. Unfortunately, it is still not known what the Global Offensive will look like, but the first announcements suggest that it will be more “realistic”.

The final date that Valve set for itself is April 1, 2023, which is exactly 12 months from now.
