What were the EDG skins for LoL supposed to look like initially? Riot shows work progress and early concepts

League of Legends

The design phase for team skins related to the winners of the 2021 World Cup.

Creating new cosmetics for League of Legends is not that easy. A huge number of people work on them, from designing the initial appearance to creating animation and testing the content.

Especially the complexity of the design increases with the team skins for World Champions. This task is more difficult due to suggestions from professional players. Because it is they who choose what they would like their signed skin to look like.

EDG skin concepts

The most important tournament in League of Legends in 2021 was won by the Chinese team EDward Gaming. Therefore, each player could choose one hero to receive their signature skin. The condition was to play at least one match with it during the event. So they chose the following heroes:

  • Graves
  • Aphelios
  • Viego
  • Zoe
  • Lulu, eventually changed to Yuumi

Players liked the official skins recently added to the servers. Aphelios fans were particularly interested in the new cosmetic accessory, creating a whole bunch of memes with it. They also decided by a majority of votes in a poll on Reddit that this is the best skin for this champion so far. They are certainly grateful to Park Do-hyeon for choosing him.

Now a 9-minute video showing the design phase of the EDG series has been released on Riot’s official YouTube account.

Among other things, several concepts for the first appearance were published. So you can see how the characters could be presented in a slightly different graphic design.

In the video, professional players also show how they would like the return to base animation to look like and what ideas they had for each element. They also explained to their fans why they chose these characters.
