Esports in LoL is doing so well that the World Championship is seeing record drops in viewership

This year’s LoL World Championship is being watched by about 40% fewer viewers.

The most important segment in the Worlds 2022 tournament in League of Legends is just beginning. Teams have already made it through the group stage and are trying to get to the grand finals. The problem is that far fewer people are following this than in the past.

In the esports media, you constantly hear about how much this segment is growing and moving forward, and how all the youngsters are interested in esports games. Meanwhile, the most important tournament in LoL is seeing huge declines.

Worlds 2022 viewership is down by a lot

Describing the audience decline of the biggest tournament in LoL as strong may be too delicate. It is a rare situation that a game at this level loses interest from as much as 40% of the community. This is currently the case during Worlds. This can be seen, for example, in a report conducted by escharts.com.

The interesting match between Korea and Europe in Group A was watched by a total of 1,390,000 people. The rematch, on the other hand, attracted slightly less, 1,219,000 viewers for the broadcast. In addition, it was the struggle between the two teams that the most fans watched together.

In 2021 it was respectively: 2,232,979 in peaks and an average of 1,300,000. In contrast, a total of 79,165,976 hours of gameplay were watched. This is incomparably more. For what reason could this be due? Here the answer is the time zone. The NA server, that is, the one located in North America, has almost 2 million players. Korea and Europe, on the other hand, total more than 10 million. This means that there are 5 times more people playing in other (larger) regions.

However, for these fans, the broadcast hours are very unfavorable. Matches take place at night or in the morning, and those going to school or work can’t afford to watch them.
