Why didn’t Netflix’s The Witcher end with Henry Cavill’s departure?

The creators had a choice to either end the series or continue it with a completely different Witcher face.

As is now known, the creators of Netflix’s The Witcher have decided to pull the series on, even despite the departure of Henry Cavill, whom we may associate with Geralt of Rivia. And while the new actor shows promise, fans are not necessarily positive.

Recall that the recent trailer for Season 3 of The Witcher on Netflix was met… with a very negative response on YouTube. The ratio of dislikes to likes was strongly marked. This shows that fans don’t like Cavill’s departure.

So why didn’t they stop at season 3?

The creators reportedly had quite a dilemma for some time about whether Netflix’s The Witcher should end with Henry Cavill’s departure from the lead role. After all, it was mainly for this actor that fans decided to watch the adaptation of the popular book series created by Andrzej Sapkowski and the games from CD Projekt Red.

Recall that Henry Cavill is retiring from the role of Geralt with the end of The Witcher season 3. That’s why the latest trailer received such an unpleasant response from fans. Interestingly, in a recent interview with Total Film magazine, the series’ director and showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, responded as to why she chose not to end the story.

I mean, we had the choice to have Geralt exit and to end the show. [But] that’s not something that we were willing to do. There’s just too many stories left to tell.

If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher, we would completely move away from the books, and I don’t think anyone would want that.

As you can see, there were several choices. Either to completely end the series with Geralt’s departure, replace him with a completely new Witcher, or simply to change the lead actor. The director, feeling the need to record more of the story, opted for the least intrusive decision in her opinion. Moreover, in the same interview, she praised Liam Hemsworth, the new Geralt, saying that he has a lot to offer and she is excited to work with him. The showrunner noted that the wait is worth it.
