Season 2 of The Last of Us will deviate more from the game? Developers talk about what they want to do with Joel

TV series and movies

It looks like the creators, with the second season of TLOU, want to start deviating a bit from the original script.

The Last of Us on HBO was an incredible hit, which, although it has already ended, is still gathering a slew of fans. The series was loved not only by video game fans, but also by people who are completely unconnected to the gaming community, but simply wanted to watch a cool series.

And no wonder – The Last of Us is great material not only for a game but also just for a film or series. Moreover, a while after the first season ended, the second season was officially announced, which is to be a continuation of the entire universe.

What will change in season 2 of TLOU on HBO?

The success of The Last of Us was primarily based on the fact that the script of the series stuck to the original storyline from the video game throughout, something that the main creators of the title also took a moment to do from the very beginning. And while some of the details diverged, they were quite insignificant, and the main plotline focused on the original story.

Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann did their best to make sure the show would appeal to everyone. And they succeeded. But interestingly enough – the producers are going to start deviating from the original in season 2 of TLOU, especially when it comes to the fate of Joel – the main character, played by Pedro Pascal.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers about The Last of Us Part II game.

.

As you know, Joel in the first half of the second part of the game is brutally killed by Abby, a new character we have the opportunity to meet. Of course, the producers of the series on HBO are aware of this, so they want to make some changes in the fate to befall Joel in the second season of the adaptation. Of course, the creators do not promise that Joel will survive the second season of the series, as Craig Mazin has clearly communicated:

This should be obvious to everyone by now, but I’m not afraid to kill off characters.

In the same statement, the showrunner said that the directors don’t feel constrained by the script, with which he probably wanted to indicate that they will mix it up.

But the important thing to note is that neither Neil [Druckmann] nor I feel constrained by the source material.

The main creators of the series are doing everything in their power to make the title very appealing. At the same time, it’s clear that they feel great about creating the script and are very confident in their next steps. The first season of The Last of Us gained incredible popularity, but will such big changes in the second part of the series pay off? It’s worth waiting for more information on this.
