Avengers: Infinity War was supposed to be 45 minutes longer? The filmmakers decided to remove this entire scene

Marvel fans are unlikely to be pleased that the filmmakers have dropped a 45-minute scene in Infinity War.

Avenger: Infinity War is the next installment in Marvel’s all-too-familiar Avengers universe. And although the film was released a good few years ago, as in 2018, fans can still find out various interesting facts about it.

It is known that two more Avengers installments are coming to theaters:

  • Avengers: The Kand Dynasty – 2025 rok,
  • Avengers: Secret Wars – 2026 rok.

However, it turns out that directors still like to talk about earlier installments, like Infinity War even now.

Infinity War shorter by almost an hour

We had the opportunity to see Infinity War in theaters in 2018. The film runs a full 2 hours and 29 minutes, but it turns out that it could have been longer by a full 45 minutes. According to the directors, an excerpt was cut from the very beginning of the film, which was supposed to tell the story of how Thanos destroyed the planet Xandar and succeeded in defeating Thor, Hulk, and Loki.

Instead, the film begins with Thanos having already accomplished his goal. Jim Starlin, one of the comic book creators, revealed in a recent podcast for Near Mint Condition that the directors cut out this entire section because they didn’t want the movie to be so long.

About a month before the movie came out, I got an email or something from Joe [Russo] saying, ‘The 45 minutes of Thanos that we had at the beginning of Infinity War, we had it cut.’

There was a whole sequence of him getting the first gem and they had to cut that out. They shot it, but they never wanted to spend the money on the effects and they didn’t want the movie to be as long as the second one [Endgame] was. They didn’t realize it was going to be quite the hit it was.

Of course, the last sentence was more of a joke, looking at the amount of money Marvel’s films earn – being the most profitable productions in the world. The creators are also aware of this. Perhaps in this case the aspect of the film’s length prevailed, rather than the lack of budget for special effects. However, what’s interesting and sad at the same time is that fans will probably never come to see the whole thing as it’s not finished.
