Tapu Fini in Pokemon GO
Tapu Fini is the legendary water and fairy Pokemon introduced in Generation VII. It is the divine guardian of Poni Island. Other islands also have their guardians, which are:
- Tapu Koko,
- Tapu Lele,
- Tapu Bulu.
Tapu Fini has no gender and it is not known if it evolves from or into another Pokemon.
Tapu Fini can be a combination of word tapu (Hawaiian for saint) and the English words finish or final, referring to the fact that the Ruins of Hope is the place where “life ends its journey”. There is also a theory that Pokemon is the “final” guardian of the island as Poni Island is the last in the trainer’s challenge.
The creature may be inspired by Kanaloa, one of the four major Hawaiian gods and the god of the ocean. Kanaloi’s affiliation with the underworld could be an inspiration for the Ruins of Hope, the Tapu Fini shrines, which are said to be the place where “life ends its journey”.
As the guardian of Poni Island, Tapu Fini is free to manipulate the water and draw energy from the ocean currents. To avoid hurting itself in combat, it covers its surroundings with a mysterious fog that puts enemies into a self-destructive trance.
Tapu Fini is able to create a bridge between the world of the living and the world of the dead using fog.
