Dozens of hours after Overwatch 2 launch, Blizzard backs off from a controversial requirement

Dozens of hours have passed since the release of Overwatch 2, very difficult hours.

The launch of Overwatch has not been without various problems. First Blizzard had trouble with the number of people joining, then the developers struggled with DDOS attacks. Then players reported a lack of cosmetic items, all sorts of bugs related to gameplay, the pass, etc.

Blizzard has put it all together in one place and will be making changes. Be on the lookout for the first major update that will significantly improve the performance of Overwatch 2.

What will change?

One of the most important things is the removal of the requirement to provide a phone number. It’s hard to say where this decision came from, while one can guess that it did, however, make it more difficult to get into the game.

The idea here is to remove the requirement to provide a number for “senior” accounts. New ones will still have to enter it. If you created an account before June 9, 2021, you can play today without entering a number.

This means that Overwatch 2 will be protected from smurfs in some way. New players will continue to have to enter their phone numbers. This is generally a rather controversial way to get rid of additional alternative accounts, but many games already apply this, especially for ranked games.

Blizzard’s announcement was divided into several parts. In a nutshell:

  • Blizzard will fix, or at least try to improve, the situation with queue bugs, crashes, and stability of Overwatch
  • The issue of missing items, account merging, etc. will be fixed.
  • The problem with incorrect locking of characters on accounts will be fixed

That is, the developers have taken aim at all the things that people have complained heavily about. First and foremost are queues, joining errors and disconnections. This greatly annoyed people, who even raced to publish screenshots of queues.
