What’s wrong with the League of Legends tutorial? It turns out that it’s virtually everything

League of Legends

Players are complaining that the tutorial is really bad and developers should update it.

The tutorial is a well-known element of many computer games. Sometimes you can stumble upon it during the first story missions, but sometimes it is a separate mode that is completely optional.

The tutorial shows players the basic mechanics, controls, and winning conditions. In theory, it also reduces the chance that the new person will get discouraged by the title, and this happens when they simply don’t understand it and become irritated.

You can also find a simple tutorial in League of Legends. The problem, however, is that, according to many fans of the game, the tutorial, instead of teaching, annoys and even harms. What’s wrong with it?

Tutorial in League of Legends

Discussions about whether LoL is an accessible game to newcomers have been ongoing for years. Many people think that the title alone explains very little. The descriptions in the client are truncated and there is no advice anywhere on how to play, for example, in the jungle.

The current tutorial that exists in the game takes the player to Summoner’s Rift, specifically mid lane (the rest of the area is darkened). There, the novice learns, among others how to use skills or just how to move around the map.

This description doesn’t sound all that bad, but anyone who has seen this tutorial in person knows that it is really bad.

One of the players created a new account, so he came across the tutorial again. The experience was so bad that he decided to share it with the rest of the community.

The player wrote down what he thought needed to be improved.

League’s tutorial is incredibly outdated and is hurting the experience for newcomers. I recently had the pleasure of making a new League account for myself. It seems as if the devs have not touched it at all for the last 5 or so seasons. Among other things, the tutorial:

  • Forces you to use locked camera

  • Does not teach any of the fundamentals besides ‘click to shoot’

  • Is outdated visually – janky UI, the first game shows active effects with old item icons, outdated artwork, etc

  • Is incredibly glitchy (many videos about it on YouTube)

  • Is unskippable even for people with multiple accounts

The author of the post stated that the tutorial not only does not convey anything of value, which can actually be useful in the game, it also hurts (outdated icons and numerous bugs are just a few examples). The worst part is that a completely new person might think that this is what LoL matches are like.

For many players, this approach to the tutorial is completely incomprehensible. According to fans, creating a solid guide could attract a lot of new people. As you know, not every beginner has friends who could guide him through Summoner’s Rift – explain the mechanics, the differences between heroes, items, roles, jungle-clearing rules, and so on. If you don’t get help from your loved ones, you may find yourself discouraged from further exploring League of Legends.
