New Overwatch 2 players would gain much more from crates than the store

Overwatch

The topic of Overwatch 2 monetization is sure to be discussed for some time to come, while slowly it is all dying out and simply becoming the norm.

Were crates better than the pass and the store? There are many different opinions on that. Some miss the – seemingly – obsolete system and others are convinced that in the second season Blizzard will improve what didn’t work in the first.

Regardless of opinion, simple mathematical operations show that overall new players would gain more from crates. Even taking into account the fact that many crate items were duplicates.

Same price, and the number of items is incomparable

One form of acquiring new cosmetic items in Overwatch was crates. Hardly anyone bought them at all because spending extra money on them was simply unnecessary when you gained so much of it during regular gameplay.

However, let’s assume that for the price of today’s two sets with skins for Overwatch 2, you will buy yourself a few dozen crates. In total, you’ll have about 50, for which you’ll pay $39.

The result? Assuming you don’t hit any duplicates, you’ll have 200 new items. Of course, this is an ideal scenario that will never come true. A few dozen duplicates are the norm, but that’s still more than 100 more items than from today’s store.

As TechRadach calculates, with 2066 items you would need 516 crates to get them all.

Conclusion – the current Overwatch 2 monetization system is simply much less profitable for players. At least for the moment. Maybe Blizzard will change the prices in the future, or maybe it will make the pass more attractive – then it will have to be reconsidered.
