What productions were the inspirations for the animated series from LoL – Arcane? This is actually quite unexpected

What was Riot Games inspired by when creating the Arcane series?

In November 2021, the world of the League of Legends community exploded with joy. The long-awaited animated series from Netflix and Riot appeared on screens. It quickly turned out to be great and piqued the interest of even those unfamiliar with League so far.

Although fans will have to wait a long time for the second season, it’s worth revisiting the first season for a while now. Few people know what the creators were inspired by during its creation.

Inspirations in Arcane

Some time ago, the Rioters responsible for Arcane decided to answer some questions about the series. Of course, there were also those about inspiration. As it turns out, they mainly concern older anime that many people may not be familiar with.

We are mainly talking about the productions of the 1990s and early 2000s, i.e. from the employees’ childhood:

I remember calling Christian after a daze that our tone might be similar to that of the darker anime I treasured growing up.

We are talking about such productions as:

  • Hellsing,
  • Berserk,
  • Ghost in the Shell,
  • Cowboy Bebop,
  • Samurai Champloo,
  • Gungrave.

That’s not all, of course. In addition to the anime itself, there were also several references to a well-known British series. This time taking place in the 1920s and telling the fate of the Mafia. Probably many people already know very well that it is about Peaky Blinders.

The release date for the second season is still unknown. Perhaps in early 2023 the creators will reveal a little more information.
